KS5 Maths Day in the Surrey Hills
Sunday, 24th April 2016
Save the date in your diary! This is now my third year working in Surrey and ever since I began, I have been keen to develop a community around the teaching of A level Mathematics. Previously I was down in Hampshire and, with Ruth Edwards at Southampton University, we developed a “travelling T party” model: informal, out-of-hours meetings hosted at a variety of colleges (all fuelled by tea, coffee and cake).
The Further Maths Support Programme (FMSP) and our hub (Surrey Plus Maths Hub) are both active and running various events and activities throughout the year, but I am keen to bring together a group of enthusiastic A level teachers to share insights and expertise and to have the opportunity to meet face-to-face in a relaxed atmosphere. Hurtwood House is a beautiful place: it’s a boarding sixth form, tucked away in the Surrey Hills. I look forward to welcoming you!
As an FMSP event, we are excited to have been able to secure Ben Sparks (@SparksMaths) to begin the day with one of his fascinating talks. The other sessions in the morning will comprise Jo Morgan (@mathsjem) talking about resources for A level teaching; myself (@sxpmaths) looking at ‘big picture’ revision activities for A level Maths; and Sue de Pomerai (@suedepom) giving us an update on the latest news about the 2017 changes.
Yes, the event is running on a Sunday! This is for two key reasons: as a boarding school, there is no quiet time Monday to Friday on which to host an event. And, importantly, the food is great on a Sunday. Thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of my headmaster, we are able to offer a Sunday roast lunch and a glass of wine (lighter salad options and non-alcoholic drinks also available!).
I’m really hoping that a number of teachers attending the event will be willing to share an A level resource or revision activity that they have used with their own classes, in the style of Teachmeet events. This just means an informal 5-10 minute time slot where you take us through your idea(s). When booking opens, there will be an option on the booking form to indicate if you would consider sharing an activity in the afternoon.
Booking a Place
Booking for the event should open within the next week – as soon as I have a formal programme and full details about the day in a presentable format. There will be no charge for attending, but places will likely be limited due to the physical spaces we are using for the talks and lunch. Follow me on Twitter and/or keep an eye on the FMSP events pages to be notified as soon as online booking is open.
